The Association has a standing of over 40 years and is involved in promoting the interests of the electric arc furnace industry. Associate  and Foreign Membership(without voting rights) is open to companies etc. who supply/manufacture inputs, technology, machinery etc. used by the electric arc furnace industry , Foreign Membership being applicable to companies established abroad.  In March 2003, the ordinary membership was broad-based to bring within the fold of ordinary members not only electric arc furnaces but also those who are operating other furnaces to produce steel/down stream products such as Mini-blast Furnace-EOF, COREX-BOF, Furnace Induction Furnace routes etc.
